Realistic Simulation of Golf Ball Impact

چکیده
This paper presents an Abaqus/Explicit simulation of the impact event when a golf club hits a golf ball. This is a challenging subject for finite element simulations because of it is characterized by high strain rate behavior. The simulation emphasizes accurate material characterization and realistic model construction. Specifically, an advanced nonlinear viscoelastic material model from Veryst Engineering’s PolyUMod library with strain rate dependence is calibrated with high-rate testing data to accurately capture the highly nonlinear behavior of the golf ball materials during impact. At the same time, a detailed finite element model of the golf ball is constructed with multiple layers of structure. The complex dimple pattern on the ball cover as well as the grooves on the golf club are modeled, both potentially important factors in impact response. Simulation results with the advanced material model are compared to those with a simple linear viscoelastic model to demonstrate the importance of accurate material characterization.

Golf Ball Impact: Material Characterization and Transient Simulation
This paper presents an LS-DYNA ® simulation of the impact event when a golf club hits a golf ball. This is a challenging subject for finite element simulations because it is characterized by high strain rate behavior: the impact occurs within milliseconds and the golf ball experiences very large deformation during this period because of the ball’s polymeric shell and core. The simulation strate...
متن کاملConstruction of the finite-element models of golf balls and simulations of their collisions
The purpose of this study is to construct a finite-element (FE) model of golf balls with hyperelasticity and viscoelasticity and to devise a method for construction of FE ball models by investigating the relationship between the material properties and the behaviour of the golf ball during and after impact. As for the material model of the FE ball model, the Mooney–Rivlin model and the three-el...

Finite element techniques are often applied to the design and development of golf clubs. While distance and accuracy are the primary design characteristics, the acoustics of the ball/club impact play an important role in player perception. Previous work has applied finite element techniques to predict the sound of a golf ball/club impact. This research helps to lay the foundations for implement...
متن کاملThe physics of golf
An overview of the application of physics to the game of golf is given. The golf swing is modelled as a double pendulum. This model and its variations have been used extensively by researchers in determining the effect that various swing parameters have on clubhead speed. These results as well as examples of three-link models are discussed. Kinematic and kinetic measurements taken on the record...
متن کاملGraphene nanocomposites for improved golf ball performance and lifetime
The average golfer and most professionals play with two-piece, three-piece, or four-piece layered golf balls. A typical two-layered golf ball is composed of a crosslinked rubber core (polybutadiene or polyurethane) and a rigid and glassy outer skin (poly(methacrylic acid) ionomer. A crosslinked rubber is an ideal thermodynamic material that recovers completely after extensive impact (rubber ela...
